My name is Kent F. I am a patient at Seim Chiropractic and have been for about 17 years. The Doctors will tell you that I am a marvel of modern chiropractic. Meaning I did a whole bunch of stupid things in my youth that have slowly caught up to me as I hit the half century mark. (But I still feel young and capable of doing the things I love to do). So what did I do in my youth. A few minor things. Let’s see I jumped out of military transports with a WWII vintage parachute that makes you come down really fast with a thud, I bungee jumped from a hot air balloon 200 feet in the air over a hard Colorado field connected only by my ankles. I played football for about 11 years and rugby for a few more after that. I used to think that the way to get off a single story house was to jump. I practiced that technique until I was about 38 or so. Oh yeah, I flew fighter type airplanes in the USAF for 5 years pulling 6 G’s on a daily basis. That means at any given time while in the jet my body would be compressed into my seat at 6 times more than the normal force of gravity. That was a lot of fun. Yes I did a few things back then and thanks to Chiropractic I still feel like I can do them still. Although I am not as crazy now, I still see skydiving with my daughter in my future plans. So here’s my Chiropractic story.
While in the Air Force at the ripe age of 26 I was out on a beautiful Saturday at this incredible golf course in Charleston, South Carolina. At this point in my life I had never felt any back pain, not one ounce. All that would change that morning. I was on a roll. I remembered shooting par on the 1st hole. I remembered the second hole was a par 4 dogleg right 420 yards over a creek to an elevated green. It was the number 2 handicap hole on the course. I tattooed the driver in my normal fade(ok slice). It was a thing of beauty. I hit that ball close to 300 yards and that was before Titanium ruled the fairways. I followed that shot with a 7 or 8 iron to be just off the fringe of the green. A quick wedge and a four foot putt and I was down for my second par of my round. Then the fun began……..
As I reached into the cup to retrieve my ball I felt this twang, this snap in my lower back. I stood up wondering “what the heck was that?” I could feel a slight spasm in my lower back but thought I could play with it. Well continue I did and with each hit my back hurt more and more. But I was having the best round of my life. I finished the front nine in 39. I was going to shoot 80 or less for the first time in my life. But I was in pain now at a level I had never felt and still have never felt again. I played two more holes and by the end of the 11th hole, I could barely stand let alone swing a club. I was walking that day on the course and managed to flag a Course Marshall down who had a cart. I struggled onto the cart barely able to sit in extreme pain and was thankfully driven to my car. Thank God that day I was driving a Bronco II which allowed me to slide the clubs into the back section without lifting them and likewise I was able to slide my pain racked body into the car for the 10 mile drive home. As I drove home I would get this occasional incredibly painful spasm on my lower left back. I was as close to being in labor as a man could get without being pregnant.
As I reached our driveway I laid on the horn seeking assistance from my wife who thankfully was home. Not knowing what was going on (long before cell phones) I told her I needed help getting out of the car. I remember struggling in pain into the living room and collapsing onto the floor in the fetal position on my right side. I laid there for at least two hours afraid to move. Finally having to use the bathroom I (with a lot of assistance) managed to crawl to the bathroom. There was no walking in my future that day. I made it to the bedroom after that and laid down on the bed afterward for the rest of the day. My wife wanted me to call a doctor but no way I would do that. You see I was a pilot and the last thing a military pilot does is go crying to a doctor. Because the first thing the Flight Surgeon (flight Doc) will do is take you off flying status and who knows if you will ever get back on flight status. With as much pain as I was in, I was afraid my flying days were over.
Luckily I was not scheduled to fly for about 4 days. At that point in my career I was flying transport aircraft on international missions around the globe. We would routinely be gone for 7 to 10 days then have 5 or 6 days off to recover and take care of the “honey do list.” The flight scheduler was able to keep me off the schedule for about a total of ten days. We can skip from this point to five years later. For those next five years until I was 31 I lived a somewhat normal life, I still ran a lot, and flew airplanes, and pretty much whatever I felt like, with one small but irritating exception. The exception was that for about 90% of the days after my initial back injury I woke up in lower back pain and I thought that was my future for the rest of my life. Little did I know……….
I left the Air Force in 1989 and in 1990 at the urging of my wife (who was already a patient) I came in, well not exactly kicking and screaming, but almost. Dr. Linda and Dr. Rick both looked at my x-rays (can you say “curvature of the spine and bone spurs”) and went to work on me, their latest project. For three weeks I came in about four times a week for treatments and low and behold, Christmas came early. One day after about three weeks I woke up and said “something’s wrong!” I wasn’t in pain. The constant nagging pain in my lower back had decided to leave me and go on to some poor other victim who wasn’t aware of Chiropractic and what it could do for you. At that point in my life I went from being in back pain 90% of the time to maybe feeling some pain 5 to 6 times a year. And when I did feel it it wasn’t life stopping. I was able to get regular adjustments, keep on pressing with my normal life and all was well. Dr. Linda and Dr. Rick with their treatments had made it where I could once again do whatever I wanted. For the past 18 years I have remained a patient of Seim Chiropractic and will always be. They have both become good friends as well as my Doctors and have always gone out of their way to fix me if I was broken. Who else can say they were adjusted by their Chiropractor in the back of a minivan before running a 10K race. Who else can say they were adjusted lying on a bench on a golf course.
I’ve had great success with the Seim’s and would recommend them to others. I could go on with a lot more examples of how they helped me, but I’ll end with one last one. Six years ago, my youthful lifestyle caught up with me and I managed to develop a herniated disk in my neck. Meaning a disk in my lower neck had ruptured and was pushing into my nerves and my spinal cord area. This all caused some pretty bad numbness in my arms and shoulders and quite a bit of pain that lasted almost all day. Dr. Linda sent me for an MRI and then referred me to a local neurosurgeon. The neurosurgeon wanted to do what they do best, but Dr. Linda told me something then that I will never forget. She told me, “don’t get the surgery until you lose loss of function.” Meaning when you can’t work anymore, and you can’t survive without it, then go under the knife. She recommended that I first attempt a series of Epidural Steroid Injections (ESI’s). These ESI’s are administered by an anesthesiologist (like when in labor) into the bulging/ruptured/herniated disk and they might reduce the inflammation causing the numbness and pain to disappear. It doesn’t always work, but a I was one of the lucky ones. After the third and final shot I woke up in recovery pain free in the neck. I could feel my arms and was 100% healed. Knock on wood but the pain was gone and it has not come back. This February will be 6 years pain free. Thanks to Dr. Linda’s advice I avoided a major surgery that unfortunately can result in more surgery in future years. Thanks Linda.
In closing, I’d recommend Chiropractic to everyone. Hey, maybe they can fix your nagging pain (no not your spouse), but in your spine. They will teach you all kinds of things. I have increased my vocabulary over the years so much that I now know the difference between a cervix and your cervical region and I can use big time words like subluxation in my everyday conversation. Chiropractic is more than just medicine, it is a way of life that could be right for you.

Suffering from lower back and leg pain for some time, becoming more severe. I knew I had to have help. I could not function with the pain I had. I was not able to work a full schedule as a flight attendant and my life as I knew, certainly was not the same.
In the past, I had tried other treatments which did not help. I didn't know who to call or what to do. I did know that I couldn't live with my pain any longer. A friend ancouraged me to call Seim Chiropractic. that was three weeks ago. Thank goodness I did.
I walked into the office in severe pain and MRI in hand. Dr. Linda Seim entered the room, took a look at me and studied my MRI. I asked, "can you help me?" Dr. Seim's answer was "give me two weeks". With Dr. Seim's adjustments and traction, day by day, I began to feel better. Slowly, my pain started subsiding and everyday living was returning. I was walking and moving much better.
It gets even better. By the end of my third week, I was back to the lifestyle I knew functioning as in the past. Is is so remarkable that in just three weeks, I am back to being myself. My family and friends are amazed at how well I am doing. Now, I wake up thinking - Life is Good. I am so grateful that Dr. Seim ws there for me.
I give Seim Chiropractic all the thanks along with their great staff. A client forever! Judy C.
